On Saturday, October 10, Surfrider Miami volunteers gathered at 8th Street Beach for a hands-on dune restoration as part of both Florida Climate Week and Surfrider Climate Week. 🌾🌊
The morning brought together community members ready to take direct climate action on Miami Beach’s coastline. Volunteers worked to remove invasive plant species and make space for native plants that strengthen the dune system against erosion, storm surge, and sea level rise. Healthy dunes are one of Miami Beach’s most important natural defenses and every restoration event moves us closer to a more resilient coast.
This event was part of two simultaneous climate weeks happening for the first time together. Florida Climate Week and Surfrider’s national Coasts and Climate Initiative both dedicated the week of October 2-11 to spotlighting local climate action across the country. Surfrider Miami’s dune restoration was a fitting representation of both efforts, demonstrating how hands-on community work builds real coastal resilience.
Thank you to everyone who showed up and gave their Saturday morning to protect Miami Beach’s dunes. And a special thank you to the VoLo Foundation for their generous support of this event.
