Miami-Dade Pass the Impervious Surface Ordinance

VICTORY!: The Impervious Surface Ordinance was passed unanimously by the county commission. This is a huge win for clean water in Miami Dade county.

One of the biggest local contributors to poor water quality is runoff from residential, urban, and industrial areas, especially in coastal areas like Miami Dade county.

Impervious surfaces such as roads, sidewalks, and parking lots, prevent water from soaking into the ground, leading to increased stormwater runoff, which can carry pollutants into our waterways, increase flooding, and reduce groundwater aquifer recharge. Miami-Dade County's proposed ordinance aims to limit hard surfaces, promote more sustainable development practices, and enhance the County’s resilience to climate change.

Wednesday, September 4th, an ordinance seeking to limit these impervious surfaces will be read by the board of county commissioners. Surfrider Miami strongly supports and urges the county to pass this ordinance.

There is a petition by Miami Waterkeeper that residents can use to show their support for this ordinance.
