The Surfrider Miami Chapter is working to eliminate single use plastics from beachside concessionaires. Most plastic pollution at sea starts out on land as litter on beaches. After plastics enter the marine environment they slowly photodegrade into smaller pieces that marine life can mistake for food, sometimes with fatal results. Eliminating single use plastics from beachside concession stands in Miami Beach will help keep harmful plastics out of our marine environment in Miami Beach.
Over 10 years ago our Surfrider Foundation Miami Chapter began advocating for all beachside concessionaires to eliminate single use plastics from their stands. On October 16th 2019, the City of Miami Beach Mayor and City Commission unanimously passed a fifth amendment to the Rules and Regulations for Beachfront Concession Operations, which requires beachfront concession operators to utilize 100% reusable products, after the expiration of a one-year educational period that will commence this month, with full implementation in October 2020.
