The Sea Remembers — Coming 2027
Native Hawaiian artist Kaili Chun has been selected to create a new underwater sculpture called The Sea Remembers. The work will be inspired by rays native to South Florida and is planned for deployment off Miami Beach between 74th and 76th Streets in 2027. The installation will be developed in collaboration with scientists, engineers, and local experts, bringing together cultural memory and marine life in a hybrid reef structure.
Chun was selected through the Blue Arts Award, which invited 15 leading cultural figures from around the world to nominate up to three artists. Three finalists participated in a week-long program engaging with experts across marine biology, reef-making, material science, and environmental policy to refine their proposals.
Heart of Okeanos — Planned for December 2026
An additional installation, the Heart of Okeanos, is planned for deployment in December 2026 near the existing car installation off South Beach (near 4th and 5th Streets). Separately, Phase 2 permitting has begun further north around 74th and 75th Streets for new ray-shaped structures designed for approximately 15 feet of water about 850 feet offshore.
