Why Compost Now?
Landfills are significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions like methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide due to the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste. Composting offers a sustainable alternative by stabilizing organic waste for reuse, effectively binding carbon to the soil rather than releasing it into the atmosphere.
The Backyard Bin Compost Program aims to help residents divert 20 to 80 pounds of waste per month from each household.
Residents:
- Turn yard and food waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer for your garden.
- Save on monthly disposal fees and fertilizer costs.
Local Community:
- Diverts organic waste from landfills, especially in areas without access to industrial composting.
- Keeps harmful synthetic fertilizers out of the bay.
Global Community:
- Reduces emissions from landfills.
- Improves water quality.
